The Princess Make-Over of a Disney Princess

19 May

This seems so strange to me– why are people getting upset about this particular Disney princess’s “makeover,” and not the way girls and women are drawn as Disney princesses in the first place?

I think the reason people are particularly angry about Merida’s Disney “makeover” is because it’s so antithetical to her character. Merida is meant to be held in opposition to the beauty ideal that Disney espouses. Let’s take her dress, for instance. She hates the dress that she’s modeled in, and she famously ruins it during the archery tournament her parents hosted for her hand. Merida is modeled after a real girl – her creator’s daughter. She was intentionally designed to look like your average girl, so changing her into an idealized, sexualized beauty has rightly angered quite a few people. Including the woman who created her.

In her creator’s response to the makeover, she stated: “Merida was created to break that mold – to give young girls a better, stronger role model, a more attainable role model, something of substance, not just a pretty face that waits around for romance.” And while we SHOULD be upset about the way that women are treated by Disney in general (particularly their treatment of women of color), Merida’s is an extraordinary case because of the nature of her character and storyline. There is no romance, and there is no transformation sequence that leaves Merida more beautiful than before.
